Gunsmith Dean working

Background to the invention.

Muzzlebrakes may not be suitable for all applications, but they definitely can provide a HUGE percentage reduction of recoil energy - especially with magnum-type cartridges. This can significantly ease the discomfort of shooting these hard-recoiling calibres. Muzzlebrakes work by redirecting the propellant gas perpendicular to the centreline of the bore as it exits the muzzle, rather than allowing it to push forward in line with the bullet, which not only disrupts the bullets flight, but also shoves the rifle rearward due to the 'jetting effect' of the propellant gas. This uncontrolled recoil effect is not only an uncomfortable (and sometimes painful) experience for the shooter, but it also puts considerable stress on the rifles scope mechanism and mounting, as well as the stock and recoil lug system.

The four main methods of reducing recoil effect are to: add weight to the rifle, fit a recoil pad, fit a silencer/suppressor, or fit a muzzle brake. A combination of these things may often be used. Fitting a recoil pad is no problem, but the other three options come with some drawbacks.

  • Added weight will help to reduce recoil, but obviously makes the rifle heavier to carry around and may adversely affect the balance/feel of the rifle.
  • A suppressor will reduce recoil and also reduce noise, but can add significant weight and bulk to a rifle. They may sometimes cause a larger point of impact shift, but not always. Hot suppressors can also create a heat shimmer/mirage effect, and can make a barrel heat up quicker and then stay hot for longer. Suppressors that are robust enough to handle magnum pressures are also usually heavier.
  • A good muzzlebrake will reduce recoil while adding minimally to the weight and overall length of the rifle. There is usually a slight bullet point of impact shift depending on whether the brake is fitted or removed.(This is also the case with suppressors or flash-hiders as well.) The downside is that they do significantly increase the muzzleblast/noise out to the side of the shooter. As a result hearing protection MUST be worn when firing the rifle.

As they say 'there is no such thing as a free lunch', and there is always a trade-off. However, the negative effect of the muzzlebrake noise/pressure wave can be easily negated by fitting earplugs (and/or other hearing protection such as ear muffs), when you are shooting. In most cases this is easily done, especially in range shooting situations, or for long range hunting when you have plenty of time to line up the shot. If you are bush hunting and don't want the brake on, you can simply remove it and fit a thread protector cap. This is the big advantage of our screwed-on brake system over the integral or permanent porting modifications, such as 'Mag-na-port'. The brakes can also be removed regularly when you are cleaning the rifles bore with copper solvent and gun oils.

After extensive testing our new 'max' series, high-efficiency compact muzzlebrakes are now available to the market.

  • The very versatile Varimax - QC muzzlebrake allows you to switch the braking function off for close-range hunting applications, while the unit remains in place on the barrel. This also means no bullet point-of-impact shift on the target, and no change in the barrel harmonics or accuracy. You just aim and fire at your target as normal.
  • Slight increased length can also help to reduce the muzzleblast slightly from short-barrelled rifles when venting function is turned off. However, hearing protection must be worn when venting/braking function is turned on.
  • Gunsmith fitting required (supplied untapered at rear)
Design registration numbers: NZ417639, AU350527.

'No Gunsmithing' muzzle brakes

Most of our standard max-series muzzle brakes are designed with gunsmiths in mind to take care of the fitting and final finishing required to suit the specific barrel and calibre sizes. By recommending that the work required be performed by a qualified gunsmith removes any liability or complications for us in ensuring that the job is done correctly and to a high standard, especially where modifications to the rifle are required.

However, to meet the growing demand for better muzzle brakes to fit to barrels which have muzzles pre-threaded at the factory, we now have several options available.

  • The Quatromax brakes are usually the easiest to supply as they require no indexing or special rotational 'timing' to be performed.
  • For the side-port brakes though like the Tresamax and Megamax it's a bit tricky, as these brakes require correct fitting and orientation, and normally this means a trip to the gunsmith. Our newly released (and patent-pending) Megamax Quicktime kit provides an amazingly quick and easy solution to this problem to get your brake aligned in seconds and shooting without delay.
  • For the Tresamax and Varimax-QC brakes we now have the option available for some barrel/thread sizes of a special tapered sleeve which installs onto the threads and slips back over the barrel by approx. 12mm and can accommodate special indexing shim washers (of various thicknesses) in order to be able to install and align these smaller diameter brakes correctly without having to modify the barrel, or use a crush-washer or some other rough or unsightly solution like grub screws, split-thread & clamp, or hex-nut arrangements.

See the information below for the specific models, or email us for more info if required. (info@muzzlebrakes.co.nz )

  • Quatromax Blaser R93 & R8 (M17x1.0mm thread option now available as well as M15x1.0mm)
  • Quatromax AR15/AR10
  • Quatromax - custom order pre-tapered and bored to specific size and calibre clearance to fit gunsmith-threaded or other factory-threaded rifle muzzles.

Quatromax - Blaser R93 & R8 special models

Quatromax - Blaser special model to suit diameter 17mm factory threaded barrel (M15x1.0mm). Also now available is a special model for the Blaser 'semi-weight' barrel (20mm diameter) threaded M15x1.0mm. (M17x1.0mm thread option - now available) Note that Blaser 'Semi-weight' barrels can now be either 19mm or 20mm diameter - please specify exactly which one you have when ordering.

Blaser R93 P1030319 P1030320

Available in M15x1.0mm standard thread or M15x1mm 'tight-spec' thread.

(NOTE: 'Tight spec' thread version is only intended for barrels with the factory muzzle thread done by Blaser factory, as they seem to undercut their muzzle thread by 0.006" to 0.007". To compensate for this our 'tight spec' thread is 0.005" undersize on crest cut diameter, so the fit of the brake will be fairly close and not too sloppy on the thread fit. If your barrel has been threaded by a gunsmith then please specify the 'standard' M15x1.0mm thread.)

Supplied pre-tapered and bored for calibre clearance; please specify calibre when ordering. Black coating of these stainless steel muzzle brakes is available if required for a small additional cost. (See price list for details.)

For the UK market we are also now producing a special adaptor sleeve and Quatromax brake combination (ordered together) for use on the Blaser factory threaded 'spigot' type barrel. Note that these barrels use the 'standard' spec M15x1.0mm threaded muzzle brake, NOT the 'tight spec' option. Black coating option available. Please email us for more details.

Megamax Quicktime Kit

Megamax Quicktime kit

P1040051 P1040183 P1040165 P1040171

This system has been primarily designed for factory threaded barrels which have a thread extension length between 16-17mm, or milspec-threaded nominal 5/8" thread lengths. Current thread sizes and (Internal diameter) barrel clearance sizes available as follows:

-28: 0.760" (Std AR15), 0.893" (ideal for JP 7/8" AR barrels)

5/8-24: 0.760" (Std AR15 or AR10), 0.806" (for Tikka T3 CTR), 0.860" (for Remington & Savage heavy barrels), 0.935" (for DPMS & similar heavy 0.920" barrels)

M14x1.0mm: 0.688"
M15x1.0mm: 0.688"
M18x1.0mm: 0.888"

*Note: The thread ideally should be of a length from 16-17mm long, with NO generous thread relief undercut just before the thread shoulder. (i.e. as found on some Sako or Blaser barrels). Most US-Milspec threaded -28 and 5/8-24 barrels that feature a thread cut that runs up very close to the shoulder are ideally suited to this brake/lock nut system. For barrels that do have the deep thread relief a rubber O-ring can be installed to prevent the Rapidex nut running partially or fully off the threaded section - which could possibly cause thread damage if the Rapidex nut was over-tightened with only partial thread engagement.

Another unique feature of this system is that it does not actually require a thread shoulder on the barrel at all - this is because the brake is secured tightly due to tension/friction between the brake body and the special Rapidex locking nut. What this means is that accuracy-minded gunsmiths can fit this system to custom barrels and use the largest thread size possible for a given barrel diameter/size at the muzzle in order to avoid the chances of bore enlargement due to excessive metal removal and resultant stress release which can occur in some barrel types. Example: If you have a barrel with a muzzle diameter of 0.710" you could effectively use an M18x1.0mm thread (0.708") cut about 16-17mm long with no shoulder at all and install the Megamax Quicktime system.
Another advantage of the Quicktime system is that the brake can be quickly removed and swapped between different rifles which have same thread and similar barrel diameters. Additional wrenches or Rapidex locking nuts may be purchased separately if required.

The kit features a Megamax muzzle brake of the requested thread size and pre-bored to specific calibre clearance, a special Rapidex tapered locking-nut of a specific barrel clearance diameter, and a specially-designed wrench to fit the Rapidex locking-nut. A small length of plastic rod is also supplied which is inserted through the brake ports when tightening the nut/brake onto the rifle at the correct index/alignment point.

See our video below to check out just how fast and easy this system really is. Can be supplied in either stainless polished finish, beadblasted finish, or black-coated bake-on paint finish (GunKote - Flat Black or Satin black. Note that there may be an additional charge for coating of some models or custom-orders.) Registered Design (Design Patent): NZ421243 . International Patents Pending.

Tresamax and Varimax-QC sleeve & shim indexing kits

Tresamax and Varimax-QC sleeve & shim indexing kits

This system has been primarily designed for factory threaded barrels which have a thread extension length between 15-17mm, or milspec-threaded nominal 5/8" thread lengths. Current thread sizes and (internal diameter) barrel clearance sizes available as follows:

-28: 0.752" (Std AR15)

5/8-24: 0.752" (Std AR15 or AR10), 0.792" (for Tikka T3 CTR)

(Tapered sleeves to suit the Blaser M15x1.0mm and other sport-weight barrels are on custom order only at this stage.)

For this system it doesn't matter if there is a thread relief under-cut before the shoulder or not, as there is no female thread in the sleeve itself on this model - the sleeve just fits loosely over the barrel and must be approximately aligned with the brake body before snugging it up tight.
Shim washer kits (featuring multi-thickness 0.750" outer-diameter shims) for either ؽ" or 5/8" threads can be supplied by us, or you can purchase them directly from Brownells (USA), or elsewhere. Using a shim-washer (or multiple washers) of varying thickness the customer can set the brake to pull up tight with a plastic dowel rod to stop just short of the correct radial indexing point.

The brake is supplied as bored for a specific calibre clearance, and can be coated black as an optional extra if required. Please specify your exact barrel diameter and calibre when ordering, and whether or not you wish to purchase a shim kit from us as well. Making your own special shim washer on a lathe is also another option, and this fits up inside the tapered sleeve so it is hidden from view.
This is similar in some ways to the Megamax Sako/Tikka special model, which also has a hidden recess for housing an indexing shim washer.

7/8" Tresamax and Quatromax: - -20, -28, M14x1.0mm, 9/16-24, M15x1.0mm, 5/8-24, M18x1.0mm

1 " Megamax :- all above threads, plus -28, M20x1.0mm, and 7/8-28.

7/8" Varimax-QC: - -20, -28, M14x1.0mm, 9/16-24, M15x1.0mm, 5/8-24, M17x1.0mm, M18x1.0mm

(Also, special model to suit Sako TRG and Tikka factory-threaded rifles M18x1.0mm - please specify calibre when ordering and your muzzlebrake will be custom-machined for correct bullet clearance. Megamax or Quatromax only)

  • All DFM muzzlebrakes feature an internal shoulder, so muzzlebrake can be seated either in the conventional manner to pull up tight on the 'shoulder', or on the muzzle/nose (actually the best method). This permits the gunsmith to use the maximum thread size possible for the diameter of barrel at the muzzle. This provides better strength, less chance of barrel stretching (due to unnecessary over-tightening by rough operators), and less chance of the barrel-bore enlarging under the threaded section at the muzzle (common problem on button-rifled barrels).

  • The bore of all (unfitted) DFM brakes as supplied to customers is 0.250" (6.35mm), which is fine for .224cal clearance. This bore hole must be opened up to 0.025" to 0.030" over bullet diameter by the installing gunsmith, and in such a way that it is perfectly in-line and concentric with the rifle barrel-bore.

  • Tresamax, Megamax and Varimax-QC muzzlebrakes must be 'indexed' to a correct rotational alignment point. To assist the gunsmith, a shallow index mark is machined at the 180 degree (Bottom-Dead-Centre) position. This mark can later be polished off, or in most cases where the rear-most 10mm is tapered down to meet the barrel, this mark will be consequentially removed anyway.

  • Some selected custom brake options/variations available. For example: 0.921" and 0.945" Quatromax or Tresamax brakes may be available.

  • Retail price of muzzlebrakes listed below. Freight costs additional, as are fitting costs and GST (sales tax) for NZ customers (additional 15%).

  • If we are supplying the muzzlebrake only then it is the responsibility of the purchaser to ensure that it is fitted correctly to their rifle by a qualified or competent gunsmith.

(* Results are indicative from testing on our purpose-built apparatus with factory-loaded ammunition: 7mm Rem Mag 145gr and .300 Win Mag 150gr. Measured results compared with competitors products (approx. 49-62% recoil reductions) using same test procedures and ammunition. Results will vary with different ammunition selections.)

TESTIMONIALS FOR DFM MUZZLE BRAKES

We have produced hundreds of our high quality, world-leading muzzle brakes, and supplied them to local and international customers who have overwhelmingly been satisfied and amazed at just how well they work, especially compared with other products that they may have used previously.

Cick Here to read a small selection of the email feedback that we typically receive from our valued customers.

Disclaimer:

Do not believe the sales pitch from some manufacturers about so-called 'quiet' muzzlebrakes.
All muzzlebrakes, regardless of design, will increase muzzle blast to the shooter to some degree. They will still be 'loud' and potentially damaging to human hearing, regardless of how efficient (or inefficient) they actually are. Provided with the use of adequate hearing protection and common sense, then no problems should arise.
We do not recommend that anyone discharge any firearm without adequate hearing protection (this includes with 'suppressed' guns/rifles as well). Persons around the shooter must also wear adequate hearing protection, and safe firearm handling practices must be adhered to at all times. We make our muzzlebrakes to be as effective at reducing recoil as possible, while still being compact, functional, and visually appealing. It is the responsibility of the shooter to ensure that they have adequate hearing protection for themselves and others. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we accept NO LIABILITY whatsoever from any issues that may arise from the use (or misuse) of our products.
